A JOURNEY THROUGH RWANDA WITH CO-FOUNDER RIAAN BEEKMAN

I recently had the pleasure of guiding clients on an unforgettable journey through the heart of this vibrant country. Every moment was a testament to Rwanda’s resilience, beauty, and diversity, from the bustling city of Kigali to the serene Volcanoes and Nyungwe National Parks.

Kigali Chronicles: Unveiling the Vibrant Heart of Rwanda’s Capital

Our adventure began in Kigali, the capital city, where we dived headfirst into the local culture with a captivating cooking class. Connecting with the community through their culinary traditions gave us a genuine glimpse into Rwandan life, fostering a sense of camaraderie that would carry us through the rest of our journey.

The next stop was a visit to Rwanda’s genocide museum, a profoundly humbling experience that left us with a newfound appreciation for the incredible strength of the Rwandan people. The museum drove home the point about how this nation has bounced back from a brutal past, reminding us of their remarkable resilience and unity.

Into the Mist: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter with Rwanda’s Majestic Mountain Gorillas

Leaving Kigali behind, we ventured into the heart of the country, marveling at the undulating landscapes that earned Rwanda its nickname, Land of a Thousand Hills.” The scenic drive was a testament to the country’s breathtaking beauty and an introduction to the fantastic experiences that awaited us.

One of the pivotal stops on our itinerary was the Ellen DeGeneres Campus. The campus is the new home of Dian Fossey’s Karisoke Research Center and a hub for scientific research and discovery in the region. We learned about the conservation efforts dedicated to protecting the endangered mountain gorillas. It became clear why visiting the center is crucial before embarking on a gorilla trek; it sets the stage, emphasizing the importance of responsible tourism and wildlife preservation.

My heart raced with anticipation the following day as we ventured into Volcanoes National Park, home to the majestic mountain gorillasThe air was thick with excitement, and the misty slopes added an extra layer of mystery to the journey. Trekking through the lush terrain felt like stepping into a real-life Jurassic Park, but instead of dinosaurs, I was looking for the incredible primates that call this place home.

Suddenly, the majestic giants emerged amidst the dense foliage—gentle, powerful, and remarkably human-like. Locking eyes with a silverback, I felt indescribably connected to these incredible creatures. The encounter was a dance of curiosity and respect, an intimate moment transcending words. It was a moment where time stood still, and the connection with these magnificent creatures left a lasting mark on my soul, making the trek an unforgettable odyssey into the heart of Rwanda’s wild beauty.

Rwanda’s commitment to conservation and protecting these endangered species made the experience even more profound. It was more than a journey; it was a privilege to share a fleeting moment in the lives of these magnificent beings, leaving an indelible mark on my heart. We did two treks, and I would highly recommend doing the same.

Lake Kivu: A Rwandan Gem Awaiting Your Exploration

From Volcanoes National Park, we headed to Lake Kivu, where, nestled along the shores of Lake Kivu, the Mantis Kivu Marina Hotel offered a luxurious retreat, allowing us to unwind and reflect on the extraordinary experiences of our journey. An immersive tea and coffee tour provided a unique insight into Rwanda’s rich agricultural heritage, and a scenic boat excursion on Lake Kivu allowed us to soak in the tranquility of one of Africa’s great lakes.

I visited the new Mantis’s Kivu Queen uBuranga houseboat, promising a new level of luxury on Lake Kivu. I am very excited about this 10-cabin marvel that launched in January 2024. Breaking new ground, the Mantis Kivu Queen will be the first touring motorboat to grace the waters of Lake Kivu, a hidden jewel in East Africa. This impressive body of water, standing almost 1.5km above sea level and spanning 90km by 30km, remains a lesser-known destination for international travelers. With its uninhabited islands and picturesque towns along the banks, the Mantis Kivu Queen promises an extraordinary journey through the undiscovered wonders of this great lake. This addition is set to redefine the Rwandan tourism experience, offering a unique blend of opulence and natural beauty.

The One & Only Nyungwe House. Nestled on the edge of the vast and ancient Nyungwe rainforest, within the lush green expanse of a working tea plantation. It offers guests the opportunity to go where few have gone before, with once-in-a-lifetime experiences in one of the world’s most exceptional natural locations. Immersed in wild beauty surrounded by awe-inspiring jungle views, every element of the resort has been carefully considered, with inspired farm-to-table dining, spa and wellness offerings that embrace nature and local traditions, and curated, authentic experiences to discover.

A Journey of Connection, Resilience, and Lasting Impressions!

In conclusion, our safari through Rwanda was nothing short of an incredible experiential holiday. From cultural immersion to wildlife conservation, each moment added a layer of richness to our journey. As we bid farewell to the Land of a Thousand Hills, we carry with us the memories of a truly majestic adventure that transcends the ordinary, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

Until next time, Rwanda!
